Bedwetting in 5, 6 and 7 year olds

About 16% of five year olds and 10% or seven year olds continue to wet the bed regularly.

Children who continue to wet on a regular basis can be treated at five years of age. It is often easier to treat children when they are young and before it has become a social problem.

The time to start is when the family feels they can deal with it for a couple of months consistently. The initial steps are usually no problem, however, getting up to a bedwetting alarm can be tiring for both parents and children. Usually with the right initial steps the child will make steady progress with the alarm so although initially it will sound every night within a couple of weeks the child starts having dry nights and gradually has more and more dry nights until a permanent cure is achieved.

It is best not to wait in the hope that the problem will resolve. This is especially true for children wetting every night. Some parents take their child to the toilet before they go to bed and think that their child had a dry night. Parents will still be doing this in a years time. When counting how often a child wets the question is "how many nights would the child be wet when the child is left to sleep though the night".
